Audiobook Trends in 2024: What’s Hot Right Now

Audiobooks have been on a major rise the last few years, but especially 2024. Whether you're into thrillers, fantasy, romance, or self-help, there’s an audiobook for It and the ways we can listen to them are growing as well.

Audiobooks Keep Growing

Audiobook sales have been climbing for over a decade, with no sign of decline. Audiobooks are set to pull in about $2 billion in sales this year! It’s not just busy adults loving audiobooks—parents are jumping on board as they look for screen-free entertainment for their kids . (As someone who values audiobooks and listen to them regularly, this excites me.)

Spotify Is In On the Action

One of the new ways of accessing audiobooks has been through Spotify. The same app where you stream your favorite music or podcast now offers audiobooks. Many of which are free through one's subscription. However, most can be bought to own. With over 160 million listeners, authors and publishers are hopping on this platform to get their books into people’s ears. Targeted ads and professional voice actors are helping make audiobooks more personal and accessible. (Spotify has certainly become a major player in the game. Although I have Spotify subscription and do also listen to audiobooks, I must admit, I do not actually listen to audiobooks on it.)

Perfect for Multitaskers

A major reason for the growth of audiobooks is simply their convenience. Regardless of what you're doing such as driving, playing a game, walking or working out, or even cleaning around a house, you can “read” a book without physically holding one to read or sitting still to do so. Audiobooks allows you a more convenient way of losing yourself Into new stories or even just reading a book for class. (I have grown to love the convenience of audiobooks. I was never a fan until I found myself without any time to read when I started working, and then I went through so many books audibly.)

More Options with Subscriptions

Many subscription services like Audible and Scribd (now Everand) are also rising in commonality as well as popularity. These subscriptions have become especially popular versus paying for each individual audibook that some apps such as Chirp require. Libraries have also seeing Increased demands for audiobooks, especially through apps such as Libby that allow one to electronically borrow ebooks and audiobooks directly through the app. (I used to use Scribd alot, and still will occasionally, but Libby is where I borrow more often than not and can see for myself the way the demand for the audiobooks have increased.)

Overall, audiobooks are more popular than ever and continue to rise In popularity. With the amount of apps and subscriptions available and publishers understanding the demand for more audiobooks, its the best time to give them a try.
